A lot of the series I paint are born out of sketches from my sketchbook. This one was no different. The themes of community had been swirling around in my thoughts, as I was filling my sketchbook pages with flocks of many tiny colorful birds.
One of the first sketches in my sketchbook that inspired my "flock" series!
This series came together quite readily! It was almost as if it was just waiting for me to bring it to life. Sometimes painting is like that - it just comes so freely and naturally and feels so good while I’m doing it. This collection of paintings was one of those times.

Our communities are what shape us, hold us, ground us. It’s who we serve and serve alongside, it’s who we fellowship with, day in and day out, it’s all the people we love, its those we do life with. I believe humans were created to be in Community, both with God and with the people he places us with. {"Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Psalm 133:1} I had so much fun exploring these themes with these little flocks of birds.

As I played with different color combinations and watched how different colors interacted with each other, I thought about how people interact with each other. As I experimented with compositions and placement of big birds and little birds, and how it impacted the overall feel of the painting, I thought about the way the placement of key people in our lives, and who we are surrounded by (by choice or not) impacts us and shapes us. I felt compelled to continue filling up the empty spaces on my paper with all sorts of happy little birds and swirls of happy colors and patterns.
These compositions and color palettes fill me with such joy! They were so fun to create and I have been having just as much fun looking at them finished. I think even though they are simple at first glance, they hold much complexity. I just love these room mock ups and think these pieces add so much life to a space!
